Collegium to examine six names for possible elevation to the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court collegiums in all probability is set to meet this week to consider the name of six judges to the Supreme Court. The collegium may reiterate the name of Justice K. M Joseph, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Uttarkhand High Court along with six other other judges.

The possible list of names include the Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee, Orissa High Court Chief Justice Vineet Saran, Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Hemant Gupta, Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog, Gujarat High Court Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Hyderabad High Court judge, Justice Ramesh Ranganathan.

It is worth recalling here that Justice Joseph’s elevation has been a bone of contention of between the collegiums and the government for some time now and his elevation has been blocked by the government in the past. The Supreme Court currently has 22 judges against a sanctioned strength while three judges including the Chief Justice are set to retire in the next four months.
